I’m sending an item abroad temporarily, I will then be collecting it again to return back to me

If you are sending an item abroad temporarily, for example if it’s being repaired, your recipient may be asked to pay duty and tax in the destination country, and you may also have to pay tax when you return it to your home country. To avoid this, you need to:

  1. Tell the courier the goods are being sent for repair/return on the customs invoice.

  2. Notify the receiver that if they are asked to pay duty, they should inform the courier that the goods are only being temporarily imported. The courier should then be able to process as duty free.

  3. When the goods are ready for return, you should ideally use the same courier to return the goods back to your home country. Select the reason for export as ‘Repair and return’ in the declaration statement as follows:

    1. If you use the same courier:

      1. Declaration statement: ‘Return of original tracking number {{state.tracking.number}}

    2. If you use a different courier:

      1. Then you will need to contact the original courier and obtain the ‘Customs entry number’

      2. Then state: ‘Return of original{{carrier.name}} tracking number {{state.tracking.number}} and customs entry number {{state.customs.entry.number}}

  4. When the goods arrive back into your home country, the courier should now clear the goods through customs duty free. If however they contact you for payment of duty and tax, inform them it’s a return and provide them the above stated details and they should be able to amend the clearance, so you don’t have to pay any duty or tax.
